Dan Kalwas, a Michigan native and CPA, started his own accounting firm in Rochester, Michigan. He became well known in the construction industry, where he specialized helping clients with construction accounting and tax help. In 1987, he brought on Michael Paperd as a staff accountant to assist the client base he had developed and to continue to grow the practice.

In 2022, Dan Kalwas decided it was time to step away from his career in accounting, but he wanted to leave his clients with someone they could trust. The firm had been sharing office space with other professional services firms for the previous 6 years, and Mike Paperd had struck up a friendship with the employees and owners of those companies. One of the employees was Jay Muchortow, a CPA, who decided he liked the idea of partnering with Mike Paperd to continue providing service to small businesses in the Metro Detroit area. So Dan was swapped out for Jay, and the name was changed to Muchortow + Paperd Advisors, but the service offerings continue to be the same!
